In the recently published Prognos Zukunftsatlas 2025, the city of Jena stands out as one of Germany’s regions with very high future prospects. The study, which evaluates all 400 districts and independent cities in Germany, highlights Jena for its strong innovation capacity, research excellence, and resilience in the face of economic transformation.
Jena shares its top-tier position with other innovation hubs such as Dresden, Darmstadt, Wolfsburg, and Ingolstadt, demonstrating its competitiveness among Germany’s most dynamic cities. The study identifies innovation as a key driver for regional transformation and resilience — and Jena is a prime example. Among the ten German locations with the highest number of R&D personnel in the private sector, eight are ranked in the top 50 overall, including Jena.
The Prognos report emphasizes that resilient, future-strong regions tend to have robust employment markets, high levels of patent activity, and a strong base of highly qualified professionals. Jena’s research institutions, such as Friedrich Schiller University Jena, and innovation ecosystems like HIPOLE Jena and the Schubert Group, play a pivotal role in maintaining this strong trajectory.
