In the current issue of the specialist magazine CHEManager (Issue 6/2025), Prof. Dr. Ulrich S. Schubert, Dr. Martin D. Hager, and Dr. Yan Lu from the Helmholtz Institute for Polymers in Energy Applications (Hipole) provide insights into the role of polymers in the development of sustainable energy technologies.
The article presents various fields of application – from redox-flow and thin-film batteries to organic and perovskite solar cells, as well as the role of polymer membranes in hydrogen electrolysis. It also discusses how bio-based raw materials, CO₂, and green hydrogen can serve as the basis for polymer production.
Research at Hipole Jena – an institute of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin in cooperation with Friedrich Schiller University Jena and CEEC Jena – is thus making a significant contribution to the energy transition.
