...shows that strontium salts are suitable as catalysts for ring-opening polymerization.

In addition to use as, e.g. biodegradable packaging materials, polyesters are often used in the medical field. These materials are produced industrially by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of lactones, lactide or glycolide. However, a harmful tin-based catalyst is used for this purpose and remains partly in the material. Could not something be used that would instead have a health-promoting effect? Because strontium salts are applied to treat osteoporosis, we tested such compounds as ROP catalysts and found that strontium diisopropoxide worked in an excellent fashion.
